Looking for a new roommate who's offering an available room? You’ve come to the right place! While the hunt for the perfect roommate with the perfect available room may seem like a daunting task, we've done everything we can to make the process as easy as possible. Here are a few helpful tips to keep in mind…

Perfect Your Profile!

It’s all about the details! We make creating your roommate profile easier than ever by asking the right questions so you can find your Perfect Match®. Simply answer a few questions, write a quick bio, and upload a few pictures, then we’ll show you your Matches. Keep in mind: the more information you provide about yourself and your needs, the better match results you’ll receive!

Don't forget: you can always adjust your profile at any time to update your preferences, provide a bit more information about yourself, or add a few new photos. Check out our Edit Your Profile tutorial for more information.

"Wants" Vs. "Needs"

When reviewing your profile and your roommate preferences, keep in mind that broadening your preferences (when possible) can result in a larger pool of Matches, which can in turn increase your chances of finding the perfect roommate. As such, it's a good idea to think about the things you absolutely need in comparison to the things you want, but aren't absolutely essential. Expanding your preferences in areas where you have a bit of flexibility can help you strengthen your chances of finding the perfect roommate.

Rent a place together!

When initially creating your "I need a room" profile, there is an option to select labeled "Find a Place Together?" This option adds in potential matches who are also looking for a place to stay that our system thinks you might get along well with! If you find someone who would be a great roommate, this allows you to connect and join forces to be able to find a place together.

If you would like to turn this option on or off, you're free to do so at any time! To do so:

Login to your Roommates.com account.
Click your circular profile photo in the upper-right, and then click "Profile" in the Notification Menu below.
Click "Edit Profile".
Click the "Who" tab.
Next, locate the section at the top labeled "Find a Place Together?", and click "Yes" below (to enable this option) or "No" (to disable this option).
Scroll to the bottom and click "Save".

That selfie life!

A picture says a thousand words, so we strongly recommend choosing photos that communicate who you are! When uploading photos, be sure to choose images which display who you are and the things you love to do. If you have any kids or pets, be sure to include them in the photos as well (if you feel comfortable doing so). Choosing the right photos can give your future roommate a picture of who they’re going to be living with (all puns fully intended!). Also, before uploading a new pic, check to make sure there aren’t any “background objects” you wouldn’t want others to see, and be sure to only upload appropriate images which adhere to our Terms of Service.

Breaking the ice!

Don’t be shy, your future roommate is looking forward to talking to you! We get it, though...starting a conversation with someone new can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. The main thing to remember is to just be you, and ask the essential questions you need to know to see if they’re a good fit.

Do you clean daily, weekly… yearly?

What’s the parking situation like?

Note: Always follow your gut! If you’re feeling uncomfortable in a conversation, end it immediately and use our Block and Report features to end the conversation for good and bring the interaction to our staff's attention for review.
