Verifying Your Account

Roommates.com offers several levels of account verification. Each verification level that you complete will light up a different verification badge within your profile; these verification badges can be a great way to indicate to other users that you are a real person and you are who you say you are.

You can access your different verification options through your Roommates.com account at any time. Simply login to your account, click on your circular profile picture in the top right-hand side corner, and click "Account" in the Notification Menu below. From your "Account" page, you can locate your verification options through the "Verify Your Account" section (located in a sidebar to the left while using a laptop/desktop, or a section near the bottom of the page while using a mobile device).  

Although not all levels of verification are required, we highly recommend utilizing all verification options (if possible) as it gives other users more confidence in contacting you and increases your chances of connecting with a perfect roommate. 

Verification Levels

Email

Email verification is required for all accounts. Once you create your Roommates.com account, we will send a "Welcome" email requesting that you verify your email address with a single click. To do so, simply click the "Verify Email" button in the "Welcome" email.

If you did not receive a "Welcome" email, we recommend checking your Spam/Junk/Promotions email (just in case the email ended up in the wrong folder). If you don't see it in any of your email folders, we recommend adding support@roommates.com and noreply@roommates.com to your Contact List within your personal email account before requesting another verification email. To do so:

  • Login to your Roommates.com account.
  • Click your circular profile photo in the upper-right, and then click "Account" in the Notification Menu below.
  • Click "Email" in the "Verify Your Account" section of the "Account" page.
  • Click "Resend Link".

Phone Number

Phone verification is required for all Roommates.com accounts. If you have not completed this verification level, you should be automatically redirected to a page reading "Get a verification code" when you login. You can complete your phone verification through this page directly. To do so:

  • Enter your nine-digit phone number in the text field which displays (###) ###-#### by default. Once you have entered your number successfully, the "Send Code" button below should turn green.
  • Click the "Send Code" button. The page should automatically refresh, displaying spaces to enter a seven-digit code.
  • Within a few minutes, you should receive a text message containing a seven-digit code. Enter the code you received in the blank spaces and click "Verify Code" below.
  • Once you see text reading "Thanks for confirming!", your phone number has been verified successfully!

If you ever need to access/review your phone verification status (or if you aren't automatically redirected to the "Ged a verification code" page when you login), simply login to your account, click on your circular profile picture in the top right-hand corner, and click "Account" in the Notification Menu below. While viewing your "Account" page, you can locate your verification options through the "Verify Your Account" section. Click the "Phone number" section to review your phone verification status (or to send a code to complete this verification if necessary).

If you change phone numbers or want to remove this verification option in the future, simply return to the phone number verification section and click on "disconnect phone number."

Please keep the following points regarding phone verification in mind:

  • Your phone number will never be visible to the public through the verification process. The only way other Roommates.com users can access your phone number is if you provide it through your Profile or in messages sent to other users.
  • When completing phone verification, standard SMS rates may apply.
  • Please note that a United States number with a "+1" country code is required for phone verification.

Legal ID 

You can purchase Identity Verification for a one-time fee of $2.99 (or, if you are a monthly recurring subscriber, we offer this verification to you for free!). This is the highest level of verification we offer. The Identity Verification option is completed with your legal identification, and the completed verification will remain on your account for as long as your account is active!

To add this level of verification to your account please follow these instructions:

  • Login to your account, and click on your circular profile pic in the upper-right of your screen.
  • Click "Account" in the Notification Menu below.
  • Choose "ID Verification."
  • You will then be given a confirmation screen to enter your payment information to purchase the $2.99 ID verification.
  • A new box will appear; follow the instructions to get your ID verified. 
  • If our third-party partner (Stripe) is able to verify all information through their proprietary system, your Profile page should show a green checkmark below your name that shows that you've verified your legal ID.
  • Please note: We allow up to 2 attempts per purchase to verify your ID. If you fail both attempts, we do not offer refunds for this service (unless your ID verification attempts were purchased to complete our high risk verification procedure).
