Create A Listing

It is necessary to create a listing in order to get the most out of Roommates.com (including the ability to receive Matches and use the Message Center to reach out to other users). Listings are designed to clearly and concisely share what you’re offering or looking for in a roommate. For users with a room, listings describe the available space along with roommate preferences. For users who need a room, listings outline preferred locations, housing needs, and roommate preferences.

When you first create your Roommates.com account, you will be prompted to create a Profile in order to provide key info about yourself (like your birth date and a profile pic). Once your Profile is complete, you're set to create your Listing.

To Create A Listing:


  • First, access your Dashboard once you're logged in.
  • Look for the Create A Listing section in the middle of your dashboard. In that section, click I Have A Room or I Need A Room based on your own needs.
    • If you set up an I Need A Room listing, you'll be prompted to provide key information such as the area of your search (with a surrounding search radius), your maximum rent, your availability date, and your desired lease durations. You'll also be asked to provide a few preferences to help guide your search.
    • If you set up an I Have A Room listing, you'll be prompted to provide your location, your monthly rent/deposit amount, and your property type. You're also able to submit additional information about the room, upload property photos, and offer more detail about the perks of the room you're offering.
  • When you're finished, click Create Listing at the bottom.

Once you create your Listing, you're automatically redirected to the About You page. This page allows you to expand your Profile by elaborating more about your Occupation, any languages you speak, and set badges to show off your hobbies and interests. You can also upload additional Profile Photos and write a Bio to share more about yourself and what you’re looking for in a roommate. Once you're finished, click Save and Continue at the bottom.

Finally, you'll be prompted to set your Roommate Preferences to outline what you're looking for in a roommate. You can set preferred gender(s), adjust the age range, and provide a few more preferences regarding pets, children, and smoking habits. Click Save at the bottom when you're finished.

Creating Multiple Listings


Each account can create and manage up to five listings at a time. This can be helpful if you're looking for a room in multiple locations, or if you have multiple rooms available for rent in your home which you'd like to highlight in different listings with different rent amounts, descriptions, and photos.

  • To create an additional listing, return to your Dashboard and repeat the listing creation process outlined above.

Please note: If you’re posting “I have a room” listings, all of your listings must use the same address.

Room listings are intended to advertise rooms in a property you currently live in and plan to share with potential roommates. For that reason, you can’t use different addresses across multiple listings.

If you try to enter a new address while creating another room listing, you’ll see a notice that all of your listings will be updated to the new address before continuing.

Important notes:

  • You can only have one listing type per account. Listings cannot be mixed; you may post either “I need a room” listings or “I have a room” listings, but not both at the same time. You can still use Search to explore other options outside your listing type.
  • If your needs change, you can switch your account type at any time. Switching between I need a room and I have a room will deactivate your existing listings, allowing you to create new ones that match your updated search. For more details, see Switch Account Type.
